Hastak's credentials and dates are unusually well documented because Purdue University publishes his faculty page directly. He holds a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Purdue (1994), an MS in Civil Engineering from the University of Cincinnati (1991), a BE in Civil Engineering from Nagpur University, India (1987), and — notably recent — an MS in Law (MSL) from Northwestern University's Pritzker School of Law, earned in 2024. He is the Reilly Professor at Purdue's Lyles School of Civil and Construction Engineering, and for more than 17 years headed the school's predecessor construction-engineering department (Dernlan Family Head of Construction Engineering and Management) until it merged with Civil Engineering to form the Lyles School on July 1, 2024. His JurisPro bio describes roughly 38 years in the construction industry, work spanning process improvement, disaster risk reduction, infrastructure management, cost control, and project management, and states he has been retained as an expert 42 times, has sat for 11 depositions, been qualified in court 4 times, and testified at trial/arbitration 4 times, with about a 50/50 plaintiff– defense split. He is credited with more than 250 publications and seven co-authored or edited books, including an infrastructure-management text published by McGraw-Hill (editions in 2006 and 2015). Leadership roles cited on his JurisPro bio: President (2022–2025) and then Immediate Past President (2025–present) of the International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction (CIB); Editor-in-Chief of the ASCE Journal of Management in Engineering (2009–2015); and long-standing involvement (35+ years) with the Construction Industry Institute and AACE's Education Board (2004–2016).
